The Pazyryk rug dates back to the 5th-4th centuries B.C. It was discovered in 1949, in an area named Pazyryk, in a mausoleum in the Altay region of Siberia. The rug had been buried underneath ice for over 2500 years. German scientist Volkmar Gantzhorn has linked the Pazyryk rug to the Armenian culture. Furthermore, textile expert Ulrich Schurmann reached the conclusion that the rug is of Armenian origin and that the design had been taken from the palaces of Armenian kings of the Urartian kingdom. The rug was woven with Armenian double knots and the red color was derived from ՛՛Vordan karmir՛՛. The authentic fragment of the Pazyryk rug is on display at the ՛՛Hermitage՛՛ museum in Saint Petersburg.
